Refinement of a long loved family cafe brand with a new store concept and logo

Refinement of a long loved family cafe brand with a new store concept and logo

Project Information

Set in three unique venues in Sheffield, Marmadukes is an all-day dining experience, built around considered interiors and good quality produce.

Husband and wife team Clare and Tim Nye founded Marmadukes in 2012 in the heart of the city with a desire to serve excellent, sustainably sourced food in a way that has a positive impact on the planet and on a customer’s day.

Establishing a second and third location, Clare and Tim wanted to retain the welcoming character of their first coffee shop while creating new spaces with an individual feel. We transformed the interiors of both, working closely with the family business to build on the success of their original concept.

The Cambridge Street location is industrious and casual. Our interiors team introduced different textures in a muted tone that suited the building, softening the space with lighting, a large curtain along one wall, plush seating, planting and a big logo in neon.

The largest of the venues, The Sorting Office was once owned by Royal Mail and has timeless original features such as a wooden floor and exposed metal beams. We built a counter using the same bricks as Cambridge Street for continuity and a large wooden frame around the kitchen area to allow customers to see food production. With wooden furniture and the installation of soft spherical lampshades, we blended cosy farmhouse interiors with contemporary Scandinavian design.

Branding also remained essential in unifying the three locations, and we took the recognisable cycling polar bear logo and refined the design, working with Arthur Mount to illustrate a series of bear scenes that could be applied to packaging, staff uniform and products in addition to the signage.

The final spaces are thriving and award winning, both attracting accolades at Sheffield Design Awards
