An integral pub in Sheffield’s music scene revived as a 1970s-inspired music hall

Project Information

A music venue and bar, Hallamshire Hotel opened as a pub in 1903 and was a thriving gig location in the 1980s, playing host to the likes of Jarvis Cocker. Having gone through various iterations (including a pizzeria and cocktail bar) in recent years, the venue is once more a central part of Sheffield’s independent music scene with a music hall upstairs and a late bar downstairs.

When the current owners took over in 2024, the aim was to capture the music scene of the 1970s with burnt oranges, disco balls and infinity mirrors. To honour the history of the original Hallamshire Hotel pub, our interiors team was tasked with introducing new elements while making it look as organic as possible. For example, the old wooden floor was preserved in certain areas, but covered with a psychedelic, black and white striped vinyl elsewhere.

Inspiration was drawn from americana, Twin Peaks and 1970s movies, and references to the music industry were found in egg box panelling synonymous with recording studios. Individual areas were developed to allow customers to enjoy the dancefloor or curl up in the snug with a cocktail. Wooden batons and terracotta seating warm up the bar area and contrast with the shimmering disco balls above.

Bespoke bench seating was constructed for the booths and infinity mirrors were built into the ceiling. Shiny light fixtures usually found in office blocks were repurposed and placed together above disco balls to bounce light around the room.

Together, the music venue and the bar offer customers a lively evening out enjoying the very best of the emerging music scene upstairs followed by a drink and dance with friends downstairs.
