Chatsworth Farm Shop

Elevating an established rural business through a vitalised brand experience

Elevating an established rural business through a vitalised brand experience

Project Information

Chatsworth Farm Shop has been a centre of quality local produce for over 40 years. Since 1977, the shop has sold estate-reared lamb, venison and beef; seasonal fruit, vegetables and flowers from the gardens, as well as a broad range of authentic artisan produce from local suppliers and makers.

Our challenge was to elevate the existing aspects of the store to create a space that was easy to navigate while fully expressing the ethos of the farm shop, the estate and its history. It was vital that in adjusting to appeal to a contemporary audience we continued to respect the heritage of the farm shop, preserving the formula of an already successful establishment.

Both the products and the farm shop building – based in the 9th Duke of Devonshire’s 1910 Stud Farm – have deep roots in the Chatsworth estate. As such, it was important that the interior furnishings and the product packaging acknowledged this heritage. Milk churns, shelving, fixtures and other decorative elements were sourced directly from the Chatsworth archive, while honey, chutney and gin packaging with ingredients from the parkland and garden had clear labelling.

New signage highlighting locally sourced, artisanal skills and handmade items unified under the ‘From the land’ concept, planting both the products and the shopfloor firmly in place, and bringing the unique narrative of the estate into much clearer focus. The unified concept also created a seamless connection between the building and the produce sourced just beyond its doors, ensuring everything from staff uniform to food counters and the direction of lighting worked to tell the same story.

Local craftspeople and builders helped to swiftly renovate the space, drawing on the neighbouring community to further connect the farm shop with its location.
